Alice Paul Institute Receives National Woman’s Party Trademarks

December 29, 2020

Mt. Laurel, NJ - The National Woman’s Party (NWP) and the Alice Paul Institute (API) announced today that they will unify their organizations at the end of 2020. Connected through the legacy of civil rights activist and suffragist Alice Paul, both non-profits share a dedication to the preservation and celebration of the history of women’s suffrage, and the continued fight for constitutionally protected equal rights for all.

The National Woman’s Party has appointed Zakiya Thomas as the organization’s new Executive Director. A dedicated champion for gender equality and an adept leader, Zakiya joins the NWP at a critical juncture as it prepares for the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and reaffirms its commitment to advance full constitutional equality for women.
One of the first African American women to earn a college degree, and an educator at the first African American public high school in the nation, Mary Church Terrell has a special place in our hearts here at the National Woman’s Party. “Whatever one may think of the methods pursued by the militant suffragettes who have been trying to force the President to exert himself more vigorously in behalf of the equal suffrage amendment, it is evident that the women have outplayed the President in the game of politics. Last fall, when many of them were arrested and sent to the workhouse for carrying banners in front of the White House bearing quotations from the President’s speeches, the Administration was compelled to release them from jail and after appeal to higher courts they won their cases. Today, NWP staff took a road trip to explore #womenshistory in #richmondva. As we approach the Centennial of the 19th Amendment, the NWP is focused on helping to elevate the local and state stories of the fight for women’s suffrage and equality in communities across the country. While fighting for women’s right to vote, the NWP followed the principle of holding the party in power responsible. They kept careful track of how effectively political parties were supporting woman suffrage, encouraging Democrats and Republicans to avoid being on the wrong side of history.
